ATTLEBORO – The annual “Be a Santa for a Senior” program continues this year with some significant changes due to the coronavirus.
The program, which has been run by Home Statt Senior Care for 15 years, collects gifts for seniors, many of whom are alone on vacation or live in nursing homes.
In the past, gift tags were attached to Christmas trees and donors would select a tag with a requested gift and return with the gift.
This year many of the support organizations and companies are not fully operational or working from home, and others like nursing homes do not allow outside visitors.
« Since seniors are the recipients of the gifts, we must be extremely careful to protect them, » said organizer Debbie Nichols.
She noted that seniors are experiencing isolation due to the pandemic and that about 100 are expected to be served by the gift program this year.
« If ever there was a year we’d like to ‘honor’ our seniors with gifts, it is this year, » said Nichols.
Blankets and toiletries, along with groceries, recipes, and clothing, are just a few of the basic needs on seniors’ vacation wish lists.
After much deliberation, it was decided to ask the public to donate or donate gift cards in denominations of $ 5 to $ 25 to companies like Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, Stop & Shop, Target, Amazon, fast food restaurants would other local shops.
Cards will be cleaned up, placed in Christmas cards, and distributed to local Council on Aging offices, including Attleboro, Mansfield and Norton.
Cards can be handed in or mailed to the Senior Care office, 555 Pleasant St. . , Suite No.. 104, Attleboro, MA 02703. The deadline is December. 18th.
« We know this has been a challenging year and many have suffered. Some people are unemployed and have suffered illness and loss, « said Nichols. « We would be delighted to have the support of people who can help in this difficult time. We know this will help make the holidays brighter for our well-deserved seniors. «
