    Gydnia, POLAND (Reuters) – Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir improved the women’s world record in the half marathon by winning gold from close range took part on Saturday at the athletics half-marathon world championships in Gdynia

    Jepchirchir, 27, finished in one hour, five minutes and 16 seconds to improve his own Prague-established mark last month, winning the title for the second time after winning it in Cardiff in 2016

    Germany’s Melat Yisak Kejeta crossed the line two seconds behind to clinch the silver medal while Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw finished third a second adrift

    19-year-old Jacob Kiplimo won the men’s race with a championship record time of 58 minutes and 49 seconds to upset Kenya’s Kibiwott Kandie who took the silver medal Ethiopian Amedework Walelegn finished third

    Kandie was the fastest man over the distance this year after running 58:38 in Prague last month

    Kiplimo compatriot Joshua Cheptegei, who holds the world records in the 5,000m and 10,000m, finished in 59:21 on his half-marathon debut to claim fourth place

    The event was originally scheduled for March but has been postponed to October due to the COVID-19 pandemic
