MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made it clear on Wednesday that in the event of a second wave of COVID-19, the state would have adequate medication and other medical supplies.

In one Press release said the FDA that the possibility of a second wave of coronavirus in Maharashtra cannot be ruled out and that the state needs to be prepared with all necessary drugs like remdesivir and favipiravir along with equipments like masks, disinfectants and oxygenation and more.

The state FDA commissioner held a meeting to discuss the available inventory of necessary medicines and equipment for COVID-19. After the meeting, he was satisfied as stocks were available to fight a possible second wave of the virus.

According to the FDA, the state currently has 51,425 injections of remdesivir, 20.25,381 favipiravir tablets and its Nagpur lab 1.97 lakh injections stored, ready for distribution.

In addition, 30 manufacturers, 88 reef fillers / distributors also provide oxygen for medical purposes in sufficient quantities. Maharashtra has a total capacity of 1287 tons of medical oxygen per day while the demand is 513 tons per day. The Commissioner was therefore assured that there is no shortage of medical oxygen supply.

The FDA also assured that N-95 masks, dual masks, triple masks and disinfectants are available on the market at reasonable prices

Maharashtra remains one of the worst hit states in the country. The number of new cases in the state has risen sharply in recent weeks.

The state authorities in Aurangabad have imposed a curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. through March 8, excluding essential services.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday fined 14,000 people in the city a total of 28 lakh who were caught in public places without a face mask.
