Chivas Guadalajara vs Puebla Prediction, Betting Odds & Picks

Chivas will be the favorites for the weekend’s match. With more roster depth and a higher caliber of players within their squad, Chivas should bounce back from their average start to the season and clinch a victory.

Surely Chivas should get their first win of the season this weekend, right? Regardless of the unfortunate setbacks that positive COVID-19 tests have created for the club, manager Luis Fernando Tena and his men have enough talent to clinch three points against Puebla.

With a long list of intriguing players and depth within the squad, Chivas should have no issues with having a successful 2020 Apertura season. Granted, they couldn’t score in their first two matches, but there’s no reason why thrilling players like Jose Juan Macias, Jesus Angulo, and others shouldn’t find the back of the net against a team like Puebla.

Speaking of, despite their four points and a current spot at third in the league table, it’s only a matter of time before Puebla begins to tumble down the pecking order. Their 4-1 win against Mazatlan in Week 1 was against a team that could arguably become the worst in the league. During Week 2’s 1-1 draw with Cruz Azul, Puebla needed a bit of luck and an incredible performance from goalkeeper Nicolas Vikonis.

The early trends for Puebla can’t continue. No matter how brilliant Vikonis has been in net, Los Camoteros can’t continue allowing other teams to dictate the pace of the game. Against Mazatlan, Puebla allowed 17 shots from the opposition. In Week 2 against Cruz Azul, they allowed a whopping total of 24.

Granted, this strategy has worked so far and the team deserves credit for overperforming, but these blessings on the pitch can’t last too much longer.

Their roster strength is below the average of the league, and in their recent draw against Cruz Azul, no Liga MX team had a worse shot-based xG (expected goals) tally in Week 2 than Puebla. Barring another highlight-worthy performance from Vikonis between the sticks, it’s unlikely that Los Camoteros will be able to maintain their satisfactory run of form for much longer.

Few clubs, if any, have more pressure in Liga MX than Chivas. Under the scrutinous spotlight of the Mexican media and millions of fans, every mistake and misstep is consistently dissected and analyzed. Which is why Chivas have to earn a win in the near future.

With a draw and loss to start the season, questions are already beginning to be asked of Tena as the leader on the sidelines. Doubts regarding players have started to mount. Skillful backups, who have needed to step in for those testing positive for COVID-19, have been underwhelming as of late.

Chivas have all of the necessary tools in the squad to gain a win against Puebla, and with more pressure building, they should be highly motivated to secure three points this weekend.

In their last eight games at home in the Estadio Akron, Chivas have just one loss.

Although they have been known to go on a short stretch of bad runs in Guadalajara, as of late, there are significant improvements with noteworthy results against teams like Leon and Monterrey.

Coupled with the added pressure of needing a win, no antidote for early season problems would be better than three points with the Estadio Akron as a setting.
